Ok, how your turntable is probably meant to work(remember this is all based on how mine functions and its a Sansui FR-1080 so yours may be different), but basically the thing is that start stop button has nothing to do with starting or stopping the rotation of the turntable, it has to do with starting and stopping play and it is what actually triggers that little arm that you adjusted to drop so that your tonearm could actually reach the record. That is the only reason they would not be working properly as they were in good working order when we packed it. Everytime you start the turntable with the start lever, it will move the memo-repeat selector to the "1" position, and then after lowering the tone-arm to the platter, it will return the selector to "0".
